Is Social Media Just Another Platform?

A friend disagrees that social media is just another channel and what I would like to know is, how different is it from direct mails, tv, radio etc.? A channel is a platform used to either deliver and or receive a message. It can be one way or interactive. A channel is not a message, which can take the form of text alone, images alone, sound alone or all of the above.

Everyone seems to think twitter is social media and social media is twitter. *Facepalm* right? Then again, it’s also not limited to Facebook, Plurk, Digg, YouTube etc. Social media existed way before that buzz word came along. Chris Pirillo had a good example. He said even dogs are into social media. When they are taken to the park to mingle with other dogs, the park is their social media. Closer to home, a game of mahjong is social media. That is because it is another channel of communication.

Have you got a different point of view? I’d love to hear it.

Social media is a channel and I think his point is that we have been selling it as “just” another channel.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with labeling it as “just” another channel but I do tell the clients that it is a different way of communicating on that channel.

It is faster, it is more personal and it is something that they are not jumping into without proper planning. I think I've seen enough companies who goes into it just because they think they can update “status” or post messages in 140 chars. Doesn't work that way.

I agree it's a totally different animal but an animal nonetheless. haha.
I think why many Malaysian companies are afraid of going into social media is as you say, it's personal and fast. But the telephone is just as fast and personal so if a company has a customer service dept, why can't it be extended to social media?

What are some of the questions you get when you recommend social media to your clients? What are the barriers, emotional or otherwise that's stopping a company from going in?
